Apple Brown Betty
Serves 6
Apple Brown Betty is one of the oldest desserts in American culinary history, dating back to colonial times. Made with buttered bread crumbs, spices, sweet apples and a generous splash of sherry, this rustic dish is sure to please modern tastes as well.
4 cups coarse fresh bread crumbs
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
4 Fuji apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh ginger or 1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 tablespoons dry sherry (optional)
Whipped cream for serving (optional)
Method:
Heat oven to 375∞ F. Lightly butter a 2-quart casserole or baking dish. Stir together bread crumbs and butter; set aside.
Combine apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, ginger, and cinnamon, mixing until well blended. To assemble brown betty, spread 1 cup of buttered bread crumbs in bottom of casserole; top with one third of apple mixture. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon sherry over apple layer, if desired.
Spread another cup bread crumbs and top with half of remaining apples and another tablespoon sherry. Make third layer of one cup of bread crumbs and top with remaining apples and sherry. Spread remaining bread crumbs on top of apples.
Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes; uncover and bake 30 minutes longer. Cool until warm and serve with whipped cream, if desired.

Which 80s Band Are You?
 |
I am the epitome of unrequited love but at least I do something constructive with it.. sing beautiful songs, which will continue to win audiences over years after we have split up. I can be wistful, cathartic and depressive but at the same time I am a very deep, thoughtful person. More than likely I am contemplating something very important even if I don't look like the sort! I think before I speak and so what I say somehow has more meaning. Basically, I'm a well rounded person so nyah :p |

Who?
Brian and I saw the Who last nite. Robert Plant opened, and despite my yelling, he did NOT play "Stairway to Heaven". Bastard. The Who did just about every Who song I would recognize, which was thoughtful of them. We got a little misplaced in the parking lot, which was dangerously close to an Indiana cornfield. Not that I was too worried, since Brian grew up in a cornfield, I knew he would be able to get us out okay.

I forgot
I was going to write something about the fun that was had at Sooz's, but I really don't remember many specifics. Met her friends from Seattle, which is cool, becasue she's had to put up with my friends for so long. She laughed at my cell phone, I do remember that much.

Ghetto cell phone
Thinking it would solve my awful reception problems, I bought a new cell phone antenna. Problem is all they had were blinky ones. I'm thinking of duct taping it.
Went to Target in pursuit of floor pillows. They didn't have them! Do people NOT use them anymore?

Home Sweet Home!
Location, location, location! I am now nestled at the heart of Wicker Park/Bucktown/whatever the kids are calling it for the next month or so. And they left the phone line on, ha ha! The bedroom is cozy, the kitchen lacks functioning major appliances, and my stereo is a Playstation, but what the hell! I'm having a good time, and that's what matters!

My teen celebrity match
Take the test
Score! Your celebrity match is Heath Ledger!
C'mon, you know there's a part of you that dreams about being swept off your feet by a blond-haired, blue-eyed rebel. Today's your lucky day. You've been matched with Heath Ledger because he's strong enough to make his own decisions.
From the land that brought us Mel Gibson and Russell Crowe, Heath's the latest tough guy to rise up from Down Under. And even on the verge of mega-stardom, Heath treats everyone with respectófrom costars to fans.
Heath has no problem going head-to-head against Hollywood expectations. No more teen flicks for him (unless of course he wants them).
A date with young Ledger could very well begin in a quiet bistro in some undiscovered, hip part of town. Granted, you're going to have a hard enough time resisting his Aussie accent. But after dinner, when he gets you on the dance floor, make sure there's a chair nearby. He'll have your head spinning just as fast as your heart.

What to buy me
I will keep adding stuff...
Hello,
Remember Wish Lists? As kids, we sweated bullets
over filling our lists with stuff we might
actually have some hope of receiving, and stuff
our friends and family would never buy us. Well, I
was visiting the Amazon.com site, and started my
own Wish List. Check it out and then create one
for yourself if you haven't already!
SAM'S WISH LIST!!
Lovefest!
Wow, look what I started! It's way cool to be appreciated by so many people. It's funny, I haven't seen my family in awhile, but with all the friends I've made, it's like my own new family. We all have to get together for my birthday, listen to the new Neko and love one another.
and if everyone will chip in to buy me a microwave for my birthday, that will be even better! :)
Horny.
The new Neko Case makes me wanna get my freak on. Go Neko!

No Bunny Golf :(
But we'll be doing Seattle/Vancouver instead. I guess it will be fun, I was looking forward to smacking some bunnies around.
Poll help!
Okay, comment in comments about what the next poll should be.
one month
Brian and I have been together for one month now. Of course, details of exactIy what happened one month ago are kind of sketchy. I'm learning to appreciate our differences. It would be kind of boring to be with someone who is exactly like me. It seems like it's been longer than a month. anyhoot, I love you Brian.
Almost decided
Looks like we're between flying into Seattle and spending the weekend in Vancouver, or Pigeon Forge, TN. Mainly for Bunny Land Mini Golf. You play golf with hundreds of live Bunnies hopping around.

MOVED!
Thanks to Clare and Brian (nearly) everything is moved. However I am hiding out in the burbs today. It's not quite as frightening as I thought it would be, I was almost mualed by a roaming gang of rogue squirrels though. No decision has been made on vacation yet.
Clare just reminded me that it is almost my birthday! Everyone, block off Sept. 6. It might be late though, if I have to work.

STILL
still still moving. Not there yet. Went garage sailing with Clare and Leslie today. Bought the best plates ever, some mixing bowls, and shower curtain hooks.
Brian and I are trying to decide where to spend Labor Day Weekend. Please post any ideas, we can go nearly anywhere in the continental US.

Still still moving
...due to complications with the key. Lane and Clare are great movers though...let's do it again sometime :P
did go to the Rock 'n' Roll McDonalds w. Lane. the scary Beatles are still kind of scary.
anyhoot. Air Show practice was going right by Sooz's window today. Kind of scary, and loud. Fish are doing well.

Still moving
Hopefully will be done tonite, not holding my breath. Clare has jury duty, I'm kind of jealous. I need to register here so I can do it too. Wacker and Fokker are swimming around. They don't seem to get too excited when I feed them. Brian assisted me with the fish feeding duties last nite. (yes, that's what the kids are calling it these days).

Moving Day part 23948348
Moving, again. And it won't be the last time, as it's only for a month and a half. Oh well, at least I have a roof over my head a cool roommate and cat. Went back to the Hideout last nite to catch the last half hour of the Drive-by Truckers show, and it was definetly worth it. There is no more rockin' band out there. And for future reference, it is also a great place to meet guys, as most ladies don't seem to be in to their music.
sooz is in Seattle thru Monday, so I have the added pressure of taking care of Wacker and Fokker, the fish that live in her old school Mac. Look for updates here, if I have some sort of internet connection going at the new place.

good morning late
Went to the Hideout last nite w/ Sooz n Brian. Sooz had a strange thing for dipping things in wax and setting things on fire. Matt and LeRoy were supposed to give us a tambourine duet but they never really came through. Hmph.

thank goodness!
I'm moving to the temporary digs Wednesday. Will move again in October, which should throw the stalkers off my tail a bit. This gives me clearance to really party tonite :)
I left my wallet at work last nite, Thanks to Lane for a loan to get me home and back to pick it up today.
I seem to be sniffly AGAIN. WTF?
This is what happens when you get drunk in line at a Wilco show.

Kung Pow Foursome (hot)
sadly, I think that the fifth member, on my neck, stole this picture.
I haven't been updating.
Blame Brian. He's occupying way too much of my time. Went to Chinatown w/ Sooz yesterday, and eventually met Clare and Becky. Bought lots of candy and Pocky and discovered a new Japanese character named Pucca. Of course, Sooz is more taken with Moshi Maru or whatever the hell its name is. He's a marshmallow bunny who is trying to find himself.

The best fortune cookie fortune ever
A nice cake is waiting for you.
Holy shit...RAMEN!
Due to the fact that I was living without cooking gas since February, I had been deprived of ramen since then. Tonite was the tastiest bowl of ramen EVER. Even though it was maruchan, and I prefer Top Ramen. Now if I can just get me some Indomie.

yay!
Should hopefully be moved into the temporary place this weekend. Brian should be home this weekend. AND I got a free Happy Penis Lotion Tshirt!
mmmm
As anxious as I may be feeling, I have this warm fuzziness that won't go away. Something that's making me listen to "Reservations" over and over again. Things can always be much worse, and I generally manage to come out okay. I need to work on my fried chicken/falafel diet though, or market it. I could have fallen into a shark tank, that would be bad. Hopefully everyone I know is safe and not floating in any shark tanks. I'm really greatful to have a bunch of cool people in my life that I really dig, and seem to be mutually dug by. Everything can be taken away, and there's still people and music there. And fried chicken/falafels, thank the gods.
I should not make this a habit
Waking up early that is. Last nite Sooz, Chokk & I met Drew & Nicole in my future new temporary neighborhood for dinner. I miss them, damn burb dwellers. Am getting a little anxious about getting into an apartment...Sooz's is nice, but she's gonna want her couch back one of these days. My butt cheeks are already imprinted on it. Saw the place I should be in anyday now, hope everyone likes sushi, becasue it may smell a bit fishy.

Big Bucks, No Whammies!
The Game Show Network not only shows the original
Press You Luck but they show a new one called "Whammy" or something. The new one of course pales in comparison, but it's an interesting companion piece. Bill Murray was supposed to be making a film about a guy who memorized the patterns on the board to win lots of money.
not like I didn't know how it would end
Saw the Wilco movie
I Am Trying to Break Your Heart with Sooz tonite. The bathroom scene was...uh, intimate? Some of it made me feel a bit uneasy, which is cool I guess. It was fun spotting people I know in the crowd scenes. I was a little dot in Grant Park...maybe you can pause the DVD when it comes out and see me. I'm just waiting for the Wendy's Kids Meal toy tie in though.

Last nite
Sooz convinced me to go to the Hideout with her when I got off work. LeRoy and Ed were there, got to catch the last set including some nice haiku readings. Afterwards, kept drinking, I seem to remember some Happy Penis Lotion going around and taking off my shirt briefly. I think that's always the sign of a good nite.
Last Minute Reminder!
My Chic-a-go-go appearance airs tonite on CAN 19 at 8:30 pm.

Police 'Rescue' Sex Doll from Lake
Mon Aug 5, 9:34 AM ET
VIENNA (Reuters) - Austrian police following up on reports of a corpse floating in Lake Constance found only an abandoned inflatable sex doll, police said Monday.
Police rushed to the lake bordering Switzerland and Germany after a boatsman Friday called to say he had spotted a body. A 20-minute search turned up the female sex dummy, they said.
If it sounds too good to be true...
Some dude just called me at work and asked if he could pay me to be my personal slave for a week. I said I'm not interested, but now I'm thinking I should have asked if he'd help me move. oops.
What a great question
I was at a loss for things to post, when my sister Mary calls and asks what 3 musicians I'd like to have a conversation with. Neil Finn, Madonna...and I don't know who else. I have to think about the third.
Hi Brian.
you told me I should post, so here it is. I think three simultaneous methods of communication is a record for me. I think you are the only person I could ever pay this much attention to.

More reflections on yesterday
Jackie had so much to drink before the show she didn't realize she ate Crab Rangoons. We also narrowly averted disaster whn Jeff Tweedy sang "She lifted up her shirt at the battle of the bands." Learned that a Kung Pow Foursome is more enjoyable with Little Dick. I think after four nites in a row, I may temporarily have reached my fill of Wilco live. I think a week or two and I'll be fine.
Willco @ the Riv, Kung Pow Foursome strikes back
Tonite was really amazingly hot in there. The show was different. A lot of the same stuff, but we got an added bonus of my cousin JP singing "Immigrant Song". Learned that Vanilla Coke and orange vodka makes a yummy drink.
I am so fucking exhausted, and I still have to move.

Wilco at the Riv, and Adventures of the Kung Pow Foursome (Hot) at the Nugg
I showed up in line after Jackie, Theresa and Dick. Sooz and I had Blue Margaritas. For some reason, I was compelled to get kind of drunk. Remarkable about tonites shows was Jeff apparantly chuckling at us in the front on the line "I think you have no home" from "Pot Kettle Black"...jerkus. the set list was similar to Madison, but it sounded great. I was missing Brian during some songs, but he left me with a slight reminder that's hard to ignore....jerkus.
Afterwards Jackie, Theresa, Chokk, Sooz n I headed to the Golden Nugget where the waitress apparantly got her breast in the whipped cream on Jackie's pancakes, which made us wig out. What is it with after Wilco meals and whipped cream?
dang, I guess I need to catch ya'll up
Madison was Wednesday. As I remarked, the stage was high. We had fun on the way though, Sooz had never had a cheese curd. The ones we got weren't as squeaky as could be. but I think it was okay. Brian and I got kind of lost downtown after the show. I lived there 5 months or so, and it didn't do a damn bit of good. As Biz commented, the conversation in Perkins was way interesting. I really have no desire to go back to Wisconsin, except the Dells.
So, we get back Thursday, and I'm instructed to go the Hideout afterwards. I was a bad influence and got Brian to go. It was some sort of soiree in honor of the Wilco movie after the Jon Langford and the Sadies (show which I didn't even see). A fabulous 12 piece Wilco cover band took the stage and wowed the crowd (including the real Wilcos) with their renditions. The rousing "California Stars" included the lovely vocal stylings of Dave Sadowski. Thankfully, the real Wilcos releaved us by playing a few, but I told Jeff he was no longer in my favorite band if they didn't include Sadowski. I do have to say the version of "Via Chicago" they pulled off was beautiful.
part 2 to come

EXHAUSTED!
But there is so much going on in my life right now, and remarkably I am not stressed, and kind of excited actually.
Way quick revue for now
Wilco in Madison:
Way hot in the theatre. Stage a ridiculous 6 feet off the ground. "Via Chicago" was beautiful. JP said I was his cousin and had to get me a copy of the setlist. Saw Biz, which was nice after a year. Brian managed to get me to work today with 5 minutes to spare.
