It's about time!

Sooz is back in 8 hours or so, and I'm going to go meet her @ the airport. I was going to surprise her, then she's all "You're going to come meet me right?"

I suppose a big banner or something is in order.

Otherwise, did NOTHING today! it was just good to totally veg out after the insane week I had. And good gods, we leave for New York Thursday!

Oh dear gods im stuffed

This was the nicest Thanksgiving I've ever had. Just a bunch of friends, lots of food, a box of wine and some other stuff. Not to mention Garrett getting whip creamed once he passed out. Lemme just say for $9.99 the box of "delicious red" wine is quite the 'bargin'. My Cracker Barrell Imitation Green Beans went over well with the non southerners.

I am so freaking pooped after this week. Sunday was Chic-a-go-go and Rhett. Monday @ the H/O then out late. Tuesday was @ Schuba's. Al-x's friend's party last nite, dinner today...I am so glad I have the weekend off!

Reconstruction revives Wacker Drive

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Home to vagrants, rodents of legendary size and an obstructing support column, decrepit Lower Wacker Drive was as much a Chicago classic as Bears football and Old Style beer.

Millions of people who have never driven it would recognize the crumbling, menacingly dim street from a famed chase scene in the movie "The Blues Brothers." Most Chicago motorists preferred to leave the covered thoroughfare to delivery drivers and cabbies.

But now, with a $200 million renovation finished and a splash of publicity about its reopening this week, the drive that hugs the Chicago River beneath some of the city's priciest real estate could become as popular as its overhead counterpart.

Both levels of one of Chicago's busiest thoroughfares are scheduled to reopen Tuesday after nearly two years of reconstruction.

Uninitiated motorists who braved the old Lower Wacker often felt they had taken their lives into their hands. For one thing, there was that pillar in one lane that forced vehicles to veer around it.

"It was dark and somewhat challenging," said Brian Steele of the Chicago Department of Transportation.

"Lower Wacker was a favorite secret among many motorists, something that they liked to keep to themselves or sometimes impress their friends," Steele said. "The secret is out."

Wacker Drive was built in 1926, and by the Great Depression its lower level was known as the "Hoover Hotel" by the destitute men who called it home. It was even mentioned at Al Capone's 1931 tax evasion trial, when U.S. Attorney George E.Q. Johnson railed against the mobster's lavish lifestyle.

"Did he buy these $27 shirts to protect the shivering men who sleep under Wacker Drive at night?" Johnson sarcastically asked the jury.

The reconstruction is being completed on time and within its budget. Lighting was improved, there is a new lane for delivery drivers turning off to the loading docks that serve 57 high-rise buildings along the drive, and difficult-to-navigate corners have been smoothed out.

And that column in one lane of traffic is gone.

"All I know is I didn't hit it," Steele said of his own driving experiences.

Cab driver Fouad Mazroua wasn't sure how he felt about the reopening. For him, Lower Wacker was the quickest way to get from the train stations west of the Loop to the offices and tourist areas on the east near the lake -- free of the stoplights that stand at every block above ground.

"It worked for the cab drivers," he said. "The traffic will be busy. It's going to be a big difference."

Wacker ReOpening!

There is a reopening cermony Wednesday. I'm going to go in hopes of there being a parade. If not, I will start one. My favorite view of Chicago is from the corner of State and Wacker, looking South. No Sears Tower or Hancock building, but just a beautiful juxtaposition of architecture styles. It's snowing today, and is absolutely beautiful!

Also discovered tonite that it is easy to barter sandwiches and salads (especially if they are Cobb) for PBRs.

Ended up going to the show Tonite at Gunther Murphy's, which seems to be the Abbey Pub's little brother. What a really good show! It seemed kind of brief to me (just about an hour?) but he ripped through stuff spanning his career (and not spending too much time on the solo album) and even threw in a Langford classic and Burl Ives to boot. Hot laptop burns scientist's penis

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Laptops have always been a hot item but a 50-year-old scientist did not realise to what extent until he burned his penis.

The previously healthy father of two remembered feeling a burning sensation after he had been writing a report at home for about an hour with the computer on his lap.

He noticed a redness and irritation the following day but it was not until he was examined by a doctor that he realised how much damage had been done.

"The ventral part of his scrotal skin had turned red, and there was a blister with a diameter of about two centimetres (0.8 inches)," Claes-Gorn Ostenson, of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, wrote in a letter published in The Lancet medical journal on Friday.

Two days later, the blisters broke and the wounds became infected and then crusted but after about a week the unidentified scientist was "healing quite rapidly."

Ostenson noted that the computer manual did warn against operating it directly on exposed skin but said the patient had lap burns even though he had been wearing trousers and underpants.

"This...story should be taken as a serious warning against use of a laptop in a literal sense," he added.

please, don't view samorama on yr laptop for long periods of time. I don't want to be responsible for this!!

Clare and I went thrifting, which turned into barring, though that was okay becasue we ran into Marilyn who seemed happy to see us. Good grief part 2

It snowed. Sooz and I ended up extremely drunk etc. We played the Sweet Valley High board game which the object of involves stealing other girl's boyfriends! And possibly nekid on the balcony in the snow. Okay, maybe not. We did go up and have drinks at the top of the Hancock Building in celebration of the first snow of the year. Sooz made a very ineffective snow angel. She is now on her way to Australia, sort of, and I am stuck home minding the kitties. I mean, I'm not really stuck, it could be worse. An indoor pool or jacuzzi would be nice. Am I rambling? I'm lonely, I think I'm gonna go watch the Nascar race and get drunk. Please, if you have my number, call me. We'll do something. Anything. I'll give you a back rub or something. Don't have my number? Email phone@samorama.com .

Oh dear gods, they are RIGHT!

Emode's Original Inkblot Test

sam, your unconscious mind is driven most by Love
Everyone has a desire to love. But your desire is rooted very deeply in your unconscious and affects many of the decisions you make in life ? whether you are aware of it or not.
You have an energy about you that inspires people to experience their true feelings of love and act kindly towards others. In this way, you and your drive for loving relationships start a chain reaction of positive experiences.
The reason you are driven by love, may be because your unconscious is trying to avoid the opposite of love ? hate. You, more than others, may be afraid of experiencing severe discord with others. That may, in turn, heavily influence your choices about relationships and the way you communicate your ideas, wants, and desires to others.
With such a strong orientation towards loving others, your relationships hold a very special place in your life. Your capacity to love may be greater than those around you, and therefore you may have more to give in relationships than your romantic partner does. Remember that this is a gift you have and one most others don't possess.
Though your unconscious mind is driven most strongly by Love, there is much more to who you are at your core.

Rock Songs, Etc.

Last nite was the final nite of the Wilco tour. I don't think I can begin to put into words how amazing it was. The band seemed very energized, enthusiastic, and putting everything into it. Jeff's voice was so emotional, to a point where I was not real enthusiastic when "sunken treasure" started to just getting sucked in.

I guess I should mention "Kamera" was dedicated to those people in the front row, who have seen more shows than the band played this year. And the "Via Chicago" opening was much appreciated by Sooz n I.

Of course, much fun was had by the Kung Pow Foursome, Dick, Mark, and Wilco Brim before and after the show. Probably nothing interesting to anyone but us though, so I'll spare ye the details.

(more pics to come)

the setlist, for those keeping score at home:

Via Chicago
I Am Trying to Break Your Heart
Handshake Drugs
Sunken Treasure
Kamera
Shot in the Arm
How to Fight Loneliness
Not for the Season
Jesus, etc.
Heavy Metal Drummer
Red-Eyed and Blue
I Got You
I'm the Man Who Loves You
Poor Places
Less Than You Think

Encore #1
Misunderstood
Far, Far Away
Hesitating Beauty
One By One
California Stars

Encore #2
I'm a Wheel
Monday
Outtasite (Outta Mind)
Casino Queen

What Kind of Sexy Are You?

take the test
sam, you're Hot 'n' Sexy
When you enter a room, all eyes gravitate toward you. Like a moth to a flame, people can't help but notice you. Maybe it's how you casually move through a crowd or that glow you give off when you flash that smile. You're hot and it shows. Could it be the haircut that says it all about you, the jeans that fit just right, or the casual way you saunter across a room looking confident from all angles?
You have an air about you that commands respect from men and women alike. You possess such outward strength that these people ache to be around you. When you speak, people hang on your every word. You are so full of charisma and cachet that, whether in a business or social setting, you can gauge the mood in the room and offer the right compliment or provocative statement for any scene. Do you have a secret intuition about how people work? Just maybe. And that's one of the sexiest things about you.

...so something weird is gonna happen to throw me off, right?

Rock n Roll Heaven

The party started out well, with the majority of the guests in costume. Then people showed up in non theme related costumes. Then the mob showed up...(ha ha, jk?).

I was Patsy Cline, Sooz was Janis Joplin (who had a twin sister there) Chokk was John Denver, later morphing into Woody Guthrie. Mama Cass, Joey Ramone, Tupac, Kurt Cobain, a Dead Deadhead, Patti Smith (who's not really dead), Ian Curtis, Sid and Nancy, all made appearances.

We got way wasted.
