R.I.P. Mr. Rogers

During the Persian Gulf War, Rogers told youngsters that "all children shall be well taken care of in this neighborhood and beyond -- in times of war and in times of peace," and he asked parents to promise their children they would always be safe.

"We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility," he said in 1994. "It's easy to say 'It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.'

"Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes."

Happy Thursday!

Hmm, my post last nite didn't update. Ah well. Delilah's was good, though EVERYONE left early before Xmike could show up. I miss Xmike. I must almost make special mention that Jon W. Drove me home. Hell, I hope I spelled the name right. I told him that he would get a mention here for the task. then he said "I haven't even CHECKED samorama.com in forever." Jerkus. It was a veritable who's who of chicago music last nite: Langford, Evelyn Weston the musical sawist, Dsad, 2 members of 50ft Queenie, the ex lead singer of Harjo...you shoulda been there!

Clever Octopus Caught with Tentacle in Shrimp Jar

Just got back from the hideout, was one of those good nites...Andrew Bird (aka sexiest man in the world according to the bathroom wall) did a few songs, as did John and Laurie Stirratt. Adam gave me his cd, and I seem to have left my mittens in his car. That's the fucking fourth pair of glove/mittens I've lost this winter! Also met Jayla, not to be confused with J-Lo, whom I hope was not too scared by my dancing to "Blinded by the Light" (what is it about that song?).

In the words of Lc.

"I don't know about you assholes, but I plan on being
at Delilah's Wed night, as Jonboy Langford is spinning
records celebrating Johnny Cash's birthday. Johnny's
had some health problems, and isn't going to be with
us forever, so I hope y'all can join me and tip a few
back in his honour."

well, since he put it that way, hell YEAH I'll be there!!

I was totally into Joe Millionaire though.

Went and saw Matt and Nora on my lunch break at the Chicago Cultural Center. It was odd to hear them during the day time, but it was very cool seeing a really diverse group enjoy them.

Lesbian monkeys challenge Darwin theory

A psychologist claims that a group of lesbian monkeys in Japan shows that Darwin's theories of evolution are incorrect.

Paul Vasey, of the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, has been studying the sex lives of Japanese macaques.

According to Darwin's theory of sexual selection, said Vasey, the male monkeys should compete amongst themselves for access to potential mates -- but the macaques don't follow that pattern.

A colony of 120 wild macaques in the mountains in Kyoto shows enormous sexual diversity, including female-female relationships. Females will reject the advances of a pursuing male in favor of their existing female partner 92.5 percent of the time.

"If females are choosing female sexual partners over male reproductive partners," Vasey told the American Association for the Advancement of Science (news - web sites), "that suggests a pretty fundamental revision of sexual selection theory.

"We've got females that are competing for males with other females, we've got males that are being choosy, males that are sexually coercing females ... we've got females sexually harassing males that don't want to copulate with them, we've got females that have sex with each other, we've got females that are competing with males for other females, we have females that are mounting males."

Vasey said it is clear the females are deriving sexual pleasure when they mount other females. In some positions, he said, a female will rub her clitoris against her partner's back, while in others, "it's common for females to masturbate with their tails" where there is no direct genital contact.

"The traditional evolutionary theory says you do things in order to reproduce," he said, "so why would you do all this non-reproductive sex? To me, that's a really compelling evolutionary puzzle."

When an non remarkable evening is sort of remarkable

Sooz and I tried to go to the new Dominicks which had these big "GRAND OPENING" signs all over it, and wasn't really open...hmmm...

I wasn't feeling the Hideout last nite, despite a great set by Danny Black, so I took off, and was questioned by some cops as to where I had been! I told them, the Hideout, they asked what that was, and said "okay, have a nice evening"...so then I'm waiting for a bus, and a cab offers me a free ride. It was cold, so I took it. I gave him a couple bucks.

Dell Dude in Pot Bust

Hey, dude, you're getting a cell! Benjamin Curtis, the 22-year old actor who portrays "Steven," the Dell Guy, in those bothersome computer commercials, was arrested late last night (2/9) on a marijuana possession charge, The Smoking Gun has learned. According to cops, Curtis was holding a "small bag of marijuana" when he was popped on Manhattan's Lower East Side (at Ludlow and Rivington for you Gothamites). Curtis is currently being held in Central Booking and is scheduled to be arraigned later today in Manhattan Criminal Court. Curtis, who lives in lower Manhattan, was charged with criminal possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor. Bonnie Shumofsky, the actor's agent, said she was unaware of her client's bust when contacted this morning by TSG.

make some slime

Area of Science: Chemistry
Meant for at least Grade K-3 (age 5-7).
This experiment is inedible.
An adult should be present.

Overview:
Make slime from everyday things in the home.

Equipment:
Borax can bought at your local grocery store in the laundry detergent aisle.
White glue can be purchased at a Mass merchandise store like Target, Walmart, or KMart.
Food coloring is optional but can be purchased in the grocery store in the baking aisle.
Ziploc bags can also be purchased at the grocery store.
Need measuring cups and spoons.

Safety:
Not to be fed to your pet or baby brother. Not good for leaving in carpets or on furniture overnight. To keep almost indefinitely, leave in ziploc bag in refrigerator when not sliming! Not a bad idea to wash hands before (so it doesn't grow mold) and after (so mom will let you eat dinner) playing with it.

How to do the experiment:
Homemade Slime Recipe

Borax
White Glue
Water
Food Coloring (optional)
Ziploc bag

1. Borax is available in the laundry section of your local grocery store. Take a cup of water and add to it 1 Tbs. of borax (approx 4% solution). Stir until completely dissolved.
2. Make a 50% water 50% white glue solution. Take 1/4 cup of each and mix thoroughly.
3. In a ziploc bag, add equal parts of the borax solution to equal parts of the glue solution. 1/2 cup of each will make a cup of slime.
4. Add a couple drops of food coloring.
5. Seal bag and knead the mixture.
6. Dig in and have fun. Remember to wash your hands after playing.
7. Keep your slime in the sealed bag in the refrigerator when not playing with it to keep it longer. Unfortunately it may eventually dry out or grow mold. Just throw it out and start again!

Explanation:
The borax is acting as the crosslinking agent or "connector" for the glue (polyvinyl acetate) molecules. Once the glue molecules join together to form even larger molecules called polymers, you get a thickened gel very similar to slime. If you've tried this recipe (formula) before using blue starch (instead of the borax) with mixed results, you won't be disappointed with this one. Works everytime! If you have access to a chemical supply house, try a 4% solution of polyvinyl alcohol instead of the glue for a less rubbery polymer and one that is transparent showing off the color better.

Neil Finn with Rhett Miller @ the Vic

Thanks a ton to Nick who was right next to me and took this with his phone!

Oh dear gods, what an incredible evening! I was a tiny bit bummed that sooz couldn't join me, but the show went on! Met the nice cold folks who had been waiting ahead of me (hi Michelle, Kendra, Nick, Natalie et al), we got to go in for a few songs of the soundcheck, in which I called Mary for "Walking on the Spot" and uh, something before that....

Our toes were all FROZEN, but we trudged in....I told everyone that Rhett was a good opener, and most of the Finn-atics (yukyuk) seemed to dig him! He was solo accoustic, thank goodness, as the songs on the new album sound better that way. I wanted to hear Rollerskate Skinny and Busted Afternoon, and was treated to the former.

Neil came out and opened with "Now We're Getting Somewhere" which was the greatest thing! He asked the crowd to give him philisophical sayings and jokes, but he didn't like the interrupting cow joke. ("You're from Chicago, aren't you? Everybody knows this one, you need to bring jokes from out of town.") I was reduced to screaming dancing dorkgirl....Natalie got pulled on stage to 'sing tim's part' on "Weather with You" and passed out delicious chocolate covered strawberries! It was unlike any concert I have ever attended, thanks as well to the Cherry Ripe and Tim Tams!!

I waited outside to try to get him to sign the book Sooz brought me back from Australia of all his lyrics, and was successful. I also asked if I could hug him, prefacing it with a pathetic "I've loved you since I was 10!" so we hugged, and I burst into tears and bawled "THAAAAAANK YOU!!" and kinda ran off!! then I got home and puked, I swear.

Setlist:

Now We're Getting Somewhere
Pineapple Head
Wherever You Are
King Tide
Locked Out
Anytime (with Rhett)
Sinner
Last to Know
Love is All That Remains
Human Kindness
Driving Me Mad
Loose Tongue
She Will Have Her Way

encore 1:
History Never Repeats (!!!)
Hole in the Ice (Peter Paul and Mary version, not on setlist)
There is a Light That Never Goes Out
Weather with You

encore 2:
Gentle Hum
Don't Dream it's Over

My NASA story

When my mom was cheating on my dad, she was seeing this guy who worked at NASA. He got us into the special VIP area to watch a shuttle take off. Unfortunatly it was the day after Kurt Cobain died, so I was all bummed, and my mom was mad at me for being sullen.

I didn't call my mom today, I knew she would be all freaked out. It sucks in general, but the way I look at it as those people died doing something pretty cool, and it sucks that they died, but they knew the risks, and...

I kinda want to go into space, but kind of not. I have a big fear of aliens. I cannot watch the movie close encouters of the third kind. freaks the fuck out of me.
