Kevin O'Donnell and the National Quartet
was really good. Kevin is always way entertaining, and of course the dreamy Andrew Bird was dreamy as ususal. It was a cool lineup, I wouldn't hesitate to go see 'em again.

apparantly the server is down for a day or so...I know you're dying to comment on that dream I had, but you will just have to wait.
I had the weirdest dream last nite
I'm the judge or something of this rock guitar talent show thingy, in seattle. There's hundreds of people with guitars waiting to audition. I'm admitting people in the auditorium and this guy comes up to the front of the line...he's kinda got an afro, and this weird mustache, wearing brown leather pants, and a black turtleneck with some gold jewelry, a white fender strat slung across his back. He tells me "I'm Jimi Hendrix, I'm back from the dead. You should just let me win the contest." The guy looks just like Ike Turner. But I KNOW that it is Jimi, and I get all agitated. "Look, man, It's great yr not dead, but you are gonna have to wait yr turn with these kids." he's all "No, I'm Jimi Hendrix, I'm the winner!" So I get all pissed, and pick him up, and carry him out of there! I was scared that in Seattle people would flip that I tossed out Jimi, but they were all cheering me on, and when I went outside, it was front page news already.
hmmmmmmm.
Oh this is funny
The LJ Times
takes entries from Live Journals and pictures from the news and makes them...well, what you see. purty funny.

I blame Mars
For some reason, the adapter/charger for my beloved vintage blueberry iBook decided to go kablooey. like sparking and stuff. It looked like it wore thru or something. Anyhoot, so i called the apple store (who are open til 11pm!) and they had them, but it was 70 damn dollars! so, sooz n i went to get it, and we stop to look at the "refreshed" table (ie scratch and dent). LO AND BEHOLD...and original iBook adapter for
$29.95!!!!!!! the box was open, but the thing was never used...what are the odds of that? cheaper then ebay for a used one, and a year warranty!!
THANK YOU APPLE GODS!!

FREAKING COMCAST!
COMCAST ARE BASTARDS! IF THERE IS A HELL, YOU WILL ALL BE THERE.
anyhoot, hi!! I'm still feeling ill, and I'll just blame comcast for it. not much happening, I tried watching a movie and passed out from the NyQuil (or Walgreens Nite Time Cold Medicine.) Most varieties of Robotussin no longer have alcohol in them. Boo hiss! what do punk rockers take now?

Ugh Sink Problems!
I decide I'm gonna scrub out the tub (no time better than 10pm) and the tub has all this standing water in it! Sooz suggests it may be hair (odd, since mine isn't very long at ALL!) so I start pulling stuff out of the drain and it's all weird and fleshy...Lo and behold, there's onions, potatoes, apples...some of the very stuff we had for dinner! so she runs the garbage disposal and it begins filling up even more! after sooz bailed a lot of the water out (and onion skin, etc) we decided to call Liquid Plum'r. so we shall see...
Ugh internet problems!
I have no idea what's up with the cable, comcast SUX, so I moved the modem, airport, etc into the living room (however we now have no cable tv out here) and it's working...knock wood.
Sooz, mark n I went to the all night flea market last nite, actually it seemed everyone was packing up by like 2:30am, but that was okay...it was kinda chilly and damp out. I bought a box of "super stars musi-cards" these great trading cards from 1991 featuring such stars as the Goo Goo Dolls, MC Hammer, and Enuff Z'nuff. If anyone has an extra Bel Biv DeVoe they need to trade, let me know. Also, there seems to be an issue getting hotdogs at 3 in morning at a gas station. what's up with that? and my sore throat isn't much better, dangit.

I'm sick :(
I don't know if it's from partying too much last nite, and yelling, but i have a horrible sore throat, am a bit hacky, and, well, there's other issues as well. So I am home alone on a Friday nite, eating rice and gravy watching cable...okay, i'm not completely alone, vin and amelia are keeping good company.
I managed to catch all of
Vh-1's I love the 70s EXCEPT the one in honor of my birth year, dangit. However, it got me into Mo Rocca (is that is name?) so I am actually watching
The Smoking Gun tv show which I guess is a rip off of Celebrity Justice which was in fact a rip of the smoking gun's website to begin with. speaking of my birthday, it's sooo gonna rock. more on that later.
Rock Over London, Rock on Chicago, Rest In Peace Wesley Willis
From Alternative Tentacles:
We are deeply saddened to report that one of our artists, Wesley Willis passed away yesterday, Thursday, August 21st. Wesley will be greatly missed by all that had the privilege to know him, as well as the fans who have been fortunate enough to experience his genius.
Wesley was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) at the end of 2002, and had to undergo emergency surgery on June 2nd to identify the source of, and to suppress internal bleeding. It is not clear if this bleeding was related to his leukemia or not, and the exact cause of death is still unknown. Wesley had been recovering at a Hospice in Illinois, and since the surgery his health had deteriorated rapidly.
His songs were simultaneously disturbing, hilarious, blunt, and intoxicating. Wesley's sheer excitement and unaffected honesty about every cultural phenomenon, defined his music as truly individual, and truly punk rock.
Wesley released well over 50 albums - 3 of which are on Alternative Tentacles, and a 4th, entitled, Wesley Willis Greatest Hits Vol. 3 (CD) had already been scheduled for release in October of this year.
For more information on Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, please visit
here.
Currently there are no plans for any funeral service but we will inform you if there will be.
Two Cow Was ROBBED!!
dangit, they soooo should have won the comically large check at the twang-off. oh well, at least i know that i should totally check them out on my birthday (although shane said they'd come play wherever i was :)
i think i can realistically check them out the same nite as the h/o...they are headlining, i believe.
dang, i'm tipsy...and sorry i didn't hang around, but jon gave me (and others) a ride home, thanks jon.
bleh!
internet is still way sporadic at home...going to check out two cow garage at the lyons den tonite for the
Twang Off finals. this is good, since i was freaking over choosing between the
Hideout Blockparty or 2cg on my bday...so at least i'll get to see them! okay, have to catch up on my other interet duties before the connection goes kablooey again.

We're in the car!!
corner of north and wells..go internet!

more internet issues at home...outside at the Starbucks at Franklin and Chicago in the shade of the el tracks with amelia (she's a Barkista, apparantly...) and a caramel frappuccino (blended beverage).
so the doofuses at comcast say they can't come out til TUESDAY! lets hope its just an outage issue.
what threat to the Bush administration are you?
this quiz is a bit silly...

Threat rating: High. The Bush administration is
concerned that it may not get a second term.
Therefore, we are going to change the rules so
that each Democrat vote only counts as 0.2
votes because Democrat is a shorter word than
Republican

Life is Good
Finally had some quality face to face time with sandi dimeo who gave my life new meaning. sandy, you are an inspiration...GOOD LUCK!!
(and thanks to donna asher for making it all possible...sandi is sooo greatful for everything you have done, and so am i in general)
I am also greatful to sooz for bringing back EIGHT cans of green boiled peanuts (not to mention everything else she always does) for me, and mark finding an exact replica of my hat that amelia ate. sometimes i just feel truly blessed for everything i have :) even though i don't necessarily believe in anything that could bless me, but that's another story.

I have discovered the power of recipes
I was really wanting Creamed Peas, so I found a recipe and made them. They are delicious! who knew cooking was so easy and tasty!
meat
i was really craving meat, so i walked to dominicks and bought a steak...and steak fries, and peas, and a pie. sometimes that just happens. so invited mike p. over and he helped me eat pie. well, we each had out own piece.
weird part of the story:
on my way home, i saw this animal skull. it was kinda large...there's this meat place right near where we live, and they actually kill the animals there...so i don't know, maybe it was a breakout or something. yes, killing animals and eating them is bad. i know.

ugh
Feeling generally crappy, for biological reasons. plus it is all weird and cold and rainy. Not much to complain about otherwise, went to Joy Yee's with sooz n mark for lunch, then went to kmart for a frame for my golden smog poster. matt and ben came over, pre-intoxicated, ate some popcorn, and then went on to party more. matt swore he was never going to party again, but i should call him tommorow in case he changes his mind.

update!
lost walled found with cash intact!!
Home!
so after a ridiculous 3 days i am crashed out in the living room...chilling before i have to work. I really should think about sleep.
Paul should be at the airport by now, sooz and serge are going to a Vikings game (Against my ex-hometown boys!), and dick is lost in Camp Snoopy with his family (stuck in the Kite Eating Tree?)
Good times were had by all, in spite of: being stuck in an elevator, losing (ANOTHER) wallet, and not getting much sleep at ALL. the music more than made up for that crap: seeing a band I never thought I would see live (and getting to thank them all), a very intimate solo set from jeff with a song I thought I would never hear (Cars Can't Escape), and that VERY direct "Box Full of Letters". I guess Golden Smog means so much to me because of "Can't Keep From Talking"...the lyrics to that one just really sum it all up for me.
hey ain't it great for us to be alive
I've been lying in wait for you to come outside
I know you don't know me but I know a lot about you
you're the one who knows me better than I do
when I get back home
I'm gonna put your records on
I play 'em way too loud and I'll sing along
I know all the words to every song
and I don't really care
but tonight you sang one wrong
and I can't keep from talking
I can't keep from talking about you
and I just wanted to thank you
thank you for doing what you do
I wanted to tell the world a little bit about myself
realize my feelings and put them on a shelf
then jump out the window so you'd all know what it's about
'cause I can't be there to help you figure it out
and I can't keep from talking
I can't keep from talking about you
and I just wanted to thank you
thank you for doing what you do

Alejandro Benefit
From Nan at Bloodshot Records:
Thanks to your contribution and generosity the Por Vida festival raised $13,000 for Alejandro Escovedo. You all rock and rule.
The silent auction alone raised $4,500. The raffle raised $461. Terry FitzGerald, who was working the door on Friday night, told everyone that it was a donation, so most folks gave at least $20. At the merchandise table many people gave us a $20 to buy an Alejandro CD and told us to keep the change for Alejandro. The bar tenders at FitzGerald's donated a percentage of their tips. The Abbey Pub is donating some of their bar ring. The silent auction winner of the Jon Langford print of Baby Alejandro On A Horse, gave the painting to Kate FitzGerald. The winner of the pearl and coral necklace gave it to her friend who was the 2nd highest bidder. The media coverage was phenomenal. On top of all of that, we had a blast. There were some excellent performances and we witnessed history in the making that could only have happened in Chicago. Cheers to you all!!

days until Golden Smog!
"He's A Dick"
I'm chatting with a friend, and notice Janina is raising her voice with a guy at the counter. He's an older dude, and he's wearing a sleeveless "Johnson Construction Co" tshirt. He's asking Janina why he can't get a refund if the vinyl doesn't play right, and messes up his turntable. Now, we check EVERY record we buy, clean it...and are generaly very picky on what we buy. So he's asking her these really dumb questions and then starts saying it's illegal to not take things back (it's not, our policy is posted) so I'm like, "fine, call the cops on us. Buy the records, or get out of the store." (He's got a pile of pretty cheap records...the Knack, Suzanne Vega...). He keeps going on, and I'm just like "Shut up, and get out, or I'll call the police!" He says something about "social responsibilities." and I dial 311 (that is legit in chicago, for non emergencies...) Janina is like yelling "don't ever come back to the store again!!" so he finally leaves, i was seriously going to jump the counter and kick him in the nuts (james later said he would have gone after him to.) Apparantly he was there with a friend, who politely bought a few records, and told us how ashamed he was...he 'lost' 500 records, and was also thrown out of Dr. Wax for a similar tirade. Is it this dude's goal to get kicked out of every record store in chicago?

Golden Smog Countdown!!
You have no idea how thrilled I am for this. So currently there are
FOUR (4)
days until I see Golden Smog.
I will likely not be able to talk about anything else until this time. Oh, except for Six Flags with John and Matt the day before. I mean, that's something. I will be making lots of dumb Golden Smog related posts until the big day.

yipes, I'm EXHAUSTED!
Tonite was the Alejandro benefit at FitzGerald's. I worked the auction with Lou and Rosie and it made about $5000!! Yeehaw! We were in a different room from the stage, so I didn't get to see too much music. Did get to catch the Waco Brothers at the end with Sally Timms, Kelly Hogan, Paul Burch and more.
okay, I so need sleep. These are going to be the longest 5 days of my life leading up to Six Flags and Golden Smog!! AHHH!

Por Vida nite 1
My task for the Alejandro Benefit tonite was selling raffle tickets. With the help of Sheila, we raised nearly $500 on those! wahoo! however, i DID NOT win, and i legitimetly bought 3 tix :(
The music was great, that goes without saying. It was cool to hear some of Nora and Matt's Monday nite songs with a full band, including sexiest man alive Andrew Bird. And Robbie Fulks tore shit up. oh and Kelly Hogan with Frisbee was really cool too.
hope to see more folks at Fitzgeralds Friday nite!
and a ps, on a non related note:
THANKS DONNA M.
my life is now complete since I own a copy of what I believe to be every existing wilco music video: Must Be High, Box Full of Letters, Outamind (outtasite), Shot in the Arm (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), Jesus, etc.
gods, I near a new aspiration.
