Ooops I did it again!

Whoa, what happened at the Hideout last nite? I only paid for one beer, but the nite (Nat's going away party with live entertainment from Ed Burch and Steve Frisbie) ended up with me making out with Waterbra and writhing around to Britney Spears songs!

good nite though...i think?

(ps - thanks to everyone who bought me drinks, shots, etc.)

OHMIGODS WHAT A WEEK!

wilco saturday.
rested sunday.
hideout monday.
rested tuesday?
bars wednesday.
mmj thursday.
R.E.M. friday
wire fest saturday (califone, lightning bolt, text of light).

this is why i love chicago. and I may do chic-a-go-go tommorow. and definitly the hideout monday. I am going to pass out, or at least sleep way in tommorow.

So the R.E.M. thing...wow. I've loved them since I was 10 years old (17 years ago for ya'll keeping score.) I was priveleged enough to see their show here at the United Center from a really unique perspective, and then got to oogle them close up. I was pretty cool throughout, I think...although i thought i was gonna puke on Mike Mills. I thanked Michael Stipe for 17 good years, and he said there's many more to come!

anyhoot, thanks to the coupla folks who made it happen. even if we didn't get there in time for the ice cream sundae bar. although, lactose intolerance and ice cream sundae bar probably don't mesh. so thank you thank you thank you. maybe we can go to the circus next month! ;) and thanks to everyone who was so kind to me, and didn't spill wine on me.

and then tonite Califone was just amazing! they were at the bottle for the wire magazine fest, and put on such an incredible show! mostly songs from quicksand/cradlesnakes, but 2 insane new ones, with glenn (from wilco?) sitting in on one. i honestly can't say what was the best show i saw this week, everything was so amazing on a different level. i love chicago. (the city, not the band. though the first few albums, up to like 6 were cool.)

OHMIGODS!!

I am going to see R.E.M. tommorow!! and allegedly will have pretty okay seats! (it just came out of nowhere sorta, so I'm pretty freaking out rightnow.)

otherwise, saw My Morning Jacket with Jasmine tonite...(who yanked a setlist for me too...cool thanks!). we were RIGHT in the spot in the middle of the stage where Jim James comes out with his guitar right to the edge of the stage and ROCKS so that was pretty intense.

discovered, unfortunetly, that I am not as HUGE a fan of the new album...it is really amazing, I just think I like the stuff on At Dawn a bit more though. It Still Moves will certainly be in the top 5 of this year for me.

Best Happy Meal Toy EVER

HE FLINGS NINJA MONKEYS!

went to delilah's for johnny cash tribute with clare and jasmine tonite...it was really full of LP trixies, which is sad...I don't get it. So jas and I went to the Bottom Lounge where Nick was spinning good music as well, and it's a big room with no trixies...I kinda miss the old delilah's though :( also had a run in with a psycho cab driver in Dunkin' Donuts...a nice full day though, can't complain.

seeing My Morning Jacket tommorow!! WOOHOO!

(and possibly R.E.M. Friday?!?!?)

"He's pretty normal"

A lovely Monday nite at the hideout which i hadn't experienced in a while. I told Jasmine i wouldn't take her with me anymore, but i guess i will next monday. It's nice to have someone around to get insanely drunk with and you know. Matt and Nora played and that was cool and I hung with my 'family' and met some more of them. I love life sometimes.

Say you miss me

the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Tour is finally at an end, and it commemorated my 40th show. The two shows at the Auditorium Theatre were pretty amazing, the first nite's show being a lot more rockin', ihmo...of cuorse the vide was different from my perspective on the two different nites, a row j seat one nite, and right on the stage the second. it's quite a magnificent venue though, and it was cool to see wilco in downtown chicago. thanks to all the cool people who made the time so cool.

now, we just have to be patient for the new album!

Wilco last nite!

Can't post much, on our way to Rosie's for a party...

the show was great, despite it being a reserved seating affair, Dick and I made sure Row J looked somewhat alive.

having a great time with all the people here...it's a bit like the real world. I wish it wouldn't end, but if it never did, we wouldn't appreciate it as much...more show details later..

Wilco On Soundstage Viewing Party!

the evening was a lovely success, thanks to everyone who came and ate food, made food, brought food (and BOOZE!!) It was really cool meeting a lot of via chicago people for the first time. We nearly had a disaster with the fondue pot, but Sooz eventually contained it. Soundstage itself was a blast to watch, the choice of songs was really eclectic. Sooz (with her cast!) and Mark nearly stole the show though...and that other guy onstage, wearing the glasses. is he in the band??

Bolshoi Theater Struggles with 'Heavy' Ballerina

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Moscow's Bolshoi Theater was embroiled in a high-profile row on Thursday with an ice-cream-loving ballerina it says is too heavy for ballet partners to lift.

Anastasia Volochkova, one of Russia's best-known ballerinas, says the theater telephoned her 12 hours before she was due to perform in Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" last week telling her not to turn up.

She told a news conference on Thursday she had been sacked.

But the prestigious theater denies dismissing her. It says it has offered her a new contract but cannot find her a partner for ballets which require lifting.

"None of the male soloists at the Bolshoi Theater agrees to dance with her, particularly in her current physical state," Bolshoi Theater director Anatoly Iskanov told Reuters.

Volochkova, who is taller than most ballerinas, admits being partial to ice cream although she opts for the lower-fat option of frozen yogurt.

"I love ice cream so much that I can't imagine life without it," she said in a statement handed out at the news conference.

Let there be rock!!

Just got back from the Drive-By Truckers at the Abbey with Clare...WOW! I hadn't seen them in about a year, at the Hideout. They played most of the new album, Decoration Day...SRO's Let There Be Rock was dedicated to the Hideout (Aha! I knew I loved these guys!) We got a special treat of an accoustic encore...a new song (i think) called "Too Much Sex, Not Enough Jesus" (AMEN!), Heathens, and Loaded Gun in the Closet...I have to say, by the time that song rolls around on the (very long!) album, after all the rockin' yr kinda 'eh' but to me it was kinda the show stopping number. Much attention is paid to the three guitar attack, and with good reason, but they really shined accoustically to boot. An important note: this was the first show I felt compelled to wear ear plugs for (dan was giving them out at the door) but my ears are still ringing like it's sunday. DEFINETLY made me feel not too bad about being at Red Rocks. I cannot stress enough to anyone that you must go see this show!!

also a special thanks to Clare who bought me this cool poster at the show from a show they played on September 6(!) in their adopted hometown of Athens, GA, and then coerced me into seeking them out to sign it. A great bunch of southern gentlemen (though i don't know about the drummer...earl got him to sign it on the bus)...There is certainly a tie now for who rocks harder live, DBT or MMJ. MMJ is gonna have an unfair advantage, I get to see them one more time this year. it's gonna be a close race.

R.I.P. Johnny Cash

I'm sick of all these folks dying. However, the concery in Rock-n-roll heaven is gonna pretty steallar this weekend

(CNN) -- The "Man in Black" died Friday. Johnny Cash was 71.

Cash died early Friday of complications from diabetes at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, hospital spokeswoman Nicole Bates said.

Perhaps the most widely recognized voice in country music, Cash recorded more than 1,500 songs, which appeared on nearly 500 albums. His career spanned more than four decades with trademark hits like "A Boy Named Sue," "Folsom Prison Blues, "Ring of Fire" and "I Walk the Line."

While Cash has long had one of the premiere voices in country music, his success crossed well over onto the pop scene. He had 48 singles on Billboard's pop charts, rivaling both The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys.

His 10 Grammys include a lifetime achievement award and the 1998 Grammy for country album of the year ("Unchained"). It's said that more than 100 other recording artists and groups have recorded "I Walk the Line."

Triumphant comeback
A child of the Depression, J.R. Cash was born February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas. Cash's parents took advantage of a New Deal farm program, moving their large family to Dyess Colony in northeast Arkansas. There they farmed cotton during the day and sang hymns on the porch at night.

At age 12, Cash was writing poems and songs and setting his sights on a musical career. After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force. The military wouldn't accept initials, so Cash chose John as his new first name. While stationed in Germany, Cash bought his first guitar and started a band.

When his hitch was over, Cash moved to Memphis where he sold appliances door-to-door while trying to break into the music business. In 1954, he auditioned for Sam Phillips at Sun Records, hoping to record some simple gospel songs. Instead, Phillips -- who had discovered Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis -- pushed Cash toward a more commercial sound.

Cash's first single, "Hey Porter," had a disappointing debut. But his follow-up, the 1955 "Cry, Cry, Cry," drew national attention. "Folsom Prison Blues" went into the Top Five in country singles in 1956, and "I Walk the Line" became Cash's first No. 1 hit. In 1957, he made his first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. And by 1958, he'd published 50 songs, sold more than six million records and moved to the Columbia label.

Through the late 1950s and into the 1960s, Cash continued to have huge hits. "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," "I Got Stripes," "Ring of Fire," "Understand Your Man" and "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" were major hits of the period. He toured worldwide and played free shows at prisons in the United States -- he first played San Quentin in 1958 when a young Merle Haggard was in the audience.

Living and working at a hectic pace, Cash became dependent on drugs. They took a toll on his career and ended his first marriage. But by 1967, Cash had overcome his addiction with the help of his singing partner, June Carter. The next year he married Carter and made a triumphant comeback. Carter and Cash had five children.

'Man in Black'
By the end of the decade, Cash owned the voice of country music. In the fall of 1969, he was considered by many to be the hottest act in the world, even outselling The Beatles. That year, his work accounted for 5 percent of all record sales in the U.S.

"The Johnny Cash Show" aired on ABC TV from 1969 to 1971 and featured guests as diverse as Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard and Louis Armstrong.

In the 1970s, Cash continued to record, although his work became more progressive and less commercial. Having never given up his fondness for gospel music, Cash co-wrote (with Larry Murray) and produced a film based on the life of Jesus. "The Gospel Road" was released in 1973, with Cash providing narration and Carter in the role of Mary Magdelene.

In his 1971 hit "Man in Black," Cash said his black clothing symbolized the downtrodden people in the world.

"Everybody was wearing rhinestones, all those sparkle clothes and cowboy boots;" he said in 1986. "I decided to wear a black shirt and pants and see if I could get by with it. I did and I've worn black clothes ever since."

Cash's 1975 autobiography, also called "Man in Black," sold 1.3 million copies.

In 1980, at 48, Cash became the Country Music Hall of Fame's youngest living inductee. He was part of the highly successful Highwaymen quartet with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. When drug problems returned with the use of pain killers, Cash entered the Betty Ford Clinic.

Late in the decade, Cash's radio popularity was fading -- a more contemporary sound was moving into country -- and he broke with Columbia. A new contract with Mercury Nashville didn't reflect his earlier success, but concert performances remained big sellers.

Hall of Fame inductee
In 1992, Cash was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. In 1994, he became hot again with the release of the acoustic "American Recordings," featuring just Cash and his guitar on yet another label, American Records. The album landed him on the pages of Rolling Stone, People and Time.

The singer was given a Kennedy Center Honors award in 1996 and was reported to have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1997. In recent bulletins, he's been said to have Shy-Drager syndrome, a degenerative nerve disease that attacks the nervous system in much the same way as Parkinson's disease.

Whether singing about outlaws of the Old West, murder and prison ballads or mountain laments, Cash sang in an unadorned, frank baritone about the plight of the common citizen.

"My roots are in the working man," Cash told the Music City News in 1987. "I can remember very well how it is to pick cotton 10 hours a day, or to plow, or how to cut wood. I remember it so well because I don't intend to ever try to do it again."

I need to straighten out my room in anticipation of the 8 houseguests we will hosting next week. My room is nice and big, with plenty of room, but I just have a tendancy to NOT put stuff away. Happy Birthday Hangover!

My birthday was pretty great, however it erupted into a drunken blur at the end of the nite...

The Hideout Block Party was RAD. I hadn't seen the Struts before (with Kelly Hogan and Nora O'Connor on vocals, those ladies can SING!)...Andrew Bird's set was DREAMY. Pernice Brothers were rad, Ed Burch joined them on the Pretenders "Talk of the Town" and Tortoise was great. Also great was drinking for free...thanks Katie!! oh, and Andrew Bird wished me a happy birthday! :)

I stayed drunk and was pretty damn wasted by Two Cow Garage at the Bottom Lounge. In fact, much of that is a blur. I'm gonna assume it was good, and I do remember them playing my request. Woo!

thanks to everyone who made it a lovely day with cards, calls, etc...and gifts!! gifts are always good!! (My mom, sooz, dick, john l, katie and tim tuten, lou (even though you didn't KNOW), rosie, mike p, judy, uyen, alison, jasmine, clare, matt, janina, patti, mary and chip, jeff, andrew bird!, shane, micah and dustin, todd, lane, jon w, dan, craig...did i forget anyone?)

Estimated time for fix: September 8, 7PM EST

Update (September 3, 4:35 PM EST): It looks like the old server is still failing intermittently. I can't debug the problem (since the server is located across the country), so the quickest solution is to ship a new server to the colocation facility. I'm going to build a server tomorrow and ship it on Friday. It should arrive Monday, September 8 around 6PM EST and should be online around 7PM.
