A very long eventful day. After a slow start (I couldn't find the folding hat!) I met James for breakfunch to give him my extra Sunday ticket and then hopped on the Ashland bus full of indie rock lovers and missed Danielson and most of Jens Lekman. Oh well. Finally found Noah and Amanda in a shady spot where we camped most of the day. Lou rallied Paul and I to go watch Mission of Burma...HOORAY ROCK. Saw lots of people I knew, and said hi to or attacked a few with hugs, which are always wonderful in sweaty nearly 100 degree weather. Devendra was entertaining. I mostly stayed mellow 'til Os Mutantes, which was just way too much fun. Dancing and sweating and finding James in the middle of it. After that we went to the Cobra for Office, but they didn't go on 'til 12:30. Paul got Kris, and Dan was there, and there was more dancing and sweating. AND THEN after peeing in a weedy field/parking lot Dan drove us to the Continental (right in my hood, who knew?) and bought us Jager and then James and I hung out.
Let's hear it for a full moon and positive planetary allignment!!!!
whew, what a long day. Worked, then Paul drove us to Milwaukee where we met Brianne for the Glenn Kotche Nels Cline alone and together show. DEAR GODS I HEART NELS CLINE. So mind blowingly intense! Also, how odd is it that the Autumn Defense and Nels and Glenn can exist in one band? Are Jeff Tweedy and Mikael whatsisname the corpus callosum that keep those left and right hemispheres working together? Amazing! And the Lite FM station was playing "Feelgood Flashback" hits so we had a wonderful singalong dance party most of the way home. And coffee. I really should rest for Hotfork Fest tomorrow, I want to see Danielson!
Worked. Went with Paul to Martyr's for Autumn Defense and Healthy White Baby. It was mellow. Maybe I was mellow. Mucca Pazza (and Lord of the Yum Yum) last nite at Hideout was pretty intense and good. James walked me home from the Hideout. Who knew that could be done? Work tomorrow, then Milwaukee, then 95 degree fest. wooooooooo.
The Best of She-Ra DVD is is pretty awesome. They just don't do animation like this anymore! Anyhoot.
Tim told me Matt was DJing tomorrow, but I can't find any proof. Mucca Pazza is at Hideout though! It's almost too overwhelming seeing them there, but maybe if I am in a good mood I will enjoy it more than last time I saw them there. The next few days are action packed: Friday is Healthy White Baby and Autumn Defense at Martyr's, then Nels Cline (OMG!!!) and Glenn Kotche in Milwaukee Saturday then Pitchfork fuckin' hot Fest on Friday. And Noah's coming! I'm still recovering from the allnighter that saturday turned into. Dan (the fan) is a damn hoot I tell ya. Oh, and new James.
I forgot She-Ra is an animal healer. She's hot too.
The other day while thrifting, I found the Suzuki Omnichord 100. They sell for about $100 on eBay, I payed $3.93 for mine, and it works! Also found a (kinda beat up) lesportsac "camera bag" for 60 cents (they sell for like $50 new). This brings my lesportsac total to EIGHT purses. Yikes. At least it's something I USE.
Went junking with John for the store today. No awesome finds for myself, but we did well. I had a hot turkey sandwich at a Greek Diner, and the gravy was kinda orange, almost thousand island dressing color. eww. Oh, hey, it's Sooz's birthday! Happy Birthday Sooz!! I hope we have fun tonite, perhaps even Wang Chung tonite, and the rest of the weekend. Blacks @ The Bottle tomorrow, and Clerks II Sunday?
Anything else? Meg found a really beautiful tabby kitten (It's name is Cynda Moore) but she can't keep it since her brand new roommate is allergic. Boo. Uh, that's it for now?
Weather Hazards for Chicago, IL: "DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM...STAY OUT OF THE SUN... AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS. DIAL 311 FOR THE LOCATIONS OF COOLING SHELTERS AND TO REPORT HEAT RELATED PROBLEMS."
I am all kinds of sick. I must send out special thanks to : Nick for covering for me, Alison for picking me up from work, Sooz for the bagel, Tim for the hug.
oh wait(s) or The Heart of Saturday Night (Oh come on, like you didn't know that was coming)
Tim actually got third row SECOND balcony. booooooo. No, wait, I cannot boo, he got tickets, period, and it's Tom (fucking) Waits. We would have a good time if it was Tom (fucking) Waits STRATOSHERE. Yeah? Yeah. Tim, who doesn't know IKEA serves Swedish Meatballs, whoa. Awm
Never heard the melody 'til I needed the song.
Yeah, tonite was the Replacements tribute show. I have to fucking love Edward Burch for going in there when all the other bands (proficiently) did really good Replacements covers and he goes in there with Andy and does like Bluegrass duo Replacements. BRILLIANT! I knew Big Buildings would do it right, and then seeing, uh, "Mark's Daughter" in there with a Penthouse Sweet, WTF?! Anyhoot, 22 Oz Blue Moons, good friends, good times! Now, I work thru next Thursday, so don't expect anything too awesome from me til next w'end. Aw, whatevs.
Is it really going to be 97° tomorrow? Seems like it, ouch.
I ended up not going Monday nite. Boo. Haven't really done much of anything. Of course, there's a lot of good stuff on the horizon: Tom Waits (eek, I hope Tim or I get tix!!!), Sufjan, World Party, JANDEK, Rhys Chatham, P'fork, h/o Monday nights! wooooo. I'm already tired.
Well, if you want to be in the front for the good bands maybe. We were forced to endure THREE cover bands, all of which had at least 6 songs in common, ie Wanted Dead or Alive. There was a lot of Berry Weiss around, which was tasty. Andrew Bird's set held most of the crowd's attention, but not this couple fighting about cheating to my left. Hmm. The new songs were weird, in a good way, but the cool thing with Bird is the songs never sound like they do live on the album, so we'll see what happens. Then Wilco, who drowned out the loudmouths. Interestingly paced set... Not quite sure how I feel about the new song Impossible Germany. The stuff that rocked rocked though, hooray Nels. The ride home with Paul, Sooz, Laura and Kris was uh... goofy. We had fun though. Ooh, and it was good seeing Slevy. And Brianne, and anyone else not mentioned here.
I rolled out of bed around 2 and decided I would go to Taste of Chicago after all for My Morning Jacket and Ray Davies. Paul, Kris and Jeff saved me a seat in like the 5th row which was cool of them! Got there in the middle of Mike Doughty's set. Man, I hated him. The only thing that was enjoyable was the American Sign Language interpreters at the side of the stage. Especially during the instrumental breaks where they air guitar and drum! Classic! So MMJ are getting ready to come on and ANDREW BIRD comes out with his violin! HOLY FUCKING SHIT! I was half assed about going, if I had missed that I would have cried so badly! Anyhoot, I was there, and they played THREE songs from At Dawn (my fave)! "Lowdown", "The Way That He Sings" and "Xmas Curtain". Could the weather have been any nicer? No way. It was lovely. Paul and I went to do some tasting when they were done. My pick for tastiest might be the Mustard Fried Catfish Nuggets, and the sauce. We found Kris a turkey leg and went back for what was left of Ray Davies set, which was good, a tolerable mix of new album stuff that wasn't awful and pandering crowd pleasing Kinks songs with very lengthy story intros. Paul and I met up with Sooz and went to Silver Cloud for dinner (well, I didn't eat, but I had a bomb pop martini which was red white and blue!) and then drove around watching amateur fireworks (and ran into the Autumn Defense). I really should rest up for the Summerfesting tomorrow.
Not the band, the absolutely ridiculous malt beverage energy drink. Man, I feel LOOPY. After working today with Adam, we met up with Sooz for a late lunch at Harold's Fried Chicken #36. We then went home where Paul and then Tim showed up. Paul brought me the Degrassi CD from Canada! Hot damn! Kris and Alison came over with 90s Trivial Pursuit, and I had a few beers and we went to Smoke Daddy for late dinner, but they couldn't find parking! Booo. Well, the four of us ate outside and got an amateur fireworks display and then came home and had more beers. Tim, Paul and I played Trivial Pursuit and I drank a Sparks and a half and felt really unbelievably WIRED. Holy shit. I then proceeded to kind of intensely beat them at the game. I had all my pies when Paul only had one and Tim none. Perhaps we should play Millenium edition next.
Oh, and there's a nine-sided die in K & A's 90s TP. Kris claims not to know where it came from, but I think the Drake was playing some weird RPG with the "Kurt Cobain" and "Dot Com Stock" pawns from the game.
Sooz had her lil' broken bone removed a little bit ago, so I've kinda been hanging out with hernot doing anything. Well, we've watched a lot of Star Trek:Deep Space Nine and some Next Gen. There was the Calexico show a while ago, where we hung with Rosie in the balcony and were later joined by Uyen and Heidi, and that was great. I really love them live, though "Bisbee Blue" which is one of my fave new songs wasn't that spectacular with the full band. I had Kangaroo at Hot Dougs. We then spent a few hours at Intonation and drank Sparks. Next day the ladies were all jazzed for Jon Brion at Intonation. I consumed Sparks and other things and hung out with Jeremy and Thax and Adam and that Benny Hill flasher guy. The Pink Line went by. THEN we went to the Hideout for Edward Burch and friends Louvin Brother tribute show which had a giant wooden Satan from the Satan is Real album.
Uh... I think that's all the fun interesting stuff. Oh saw Nacho Libre with Amanda which I enjoyed immensely. Looking forward to the 4th of July midweek weekend! Paul is coming, and Andrew Bird is playing with Wilco at Summerfest. OMGOMGOMG!!
Oh, Laura came over one nite and made Mulligapunxatawny Stew which was delicious.
