Vacation!
What did I do this week? Not much. I didn't go to Hideout tonight. I really have nothing exciting to say. Oh, except
listen to this awesome Daytrotter Session from Baby Teeth! There's no Swim Team, but it's still great stuff.
Oh and just for some Will Oldham love, here is a pic Sooz took at that show. Sigh.

oh hooray!
I'm back in full party mode. Last night was Bobby Conn's 40th, and he gave the performance of someone's life at the Hideout. He even sang to me!! (and like 4 other girls, and one guy. but still) Okay, how many of Chicago's best bands can Jim Cooper be in? It should be illegal!
Tonight was my first night at Silvies. Thanks Tim, for doing that.
I have finally made the decision that I am going to New York next weekend, because how can I really pass up Sloan in Central Park, plus a coupla Wilco GA shows. Answer: I cannot. Not to mention I get to cramp Tim's style in NY. Take that, sucker!
This is gonna be a long week. Oh fuck, Plastic Crimewave Sound gets back, and plays Hideout Friday, and then Adam and those soul guys play Sat, but I may only make it for the dance party. I am a smidge bummed I don't get to go to Lawrence's Sunday thing, but how often do I get to see SLOAN IN CENTRAL PARK!?! ARGHHHHHHHHHHH!
PS - Running into Thax at Best Sub #2 made the night complete. I love that he waits 20 minutes for the fried chicken.

I'm livin' it up!

Today was make a new start at the Hideout night. I will not ever be sad at Hideout ever again, so who better to usher in a new era than Detholz! Holy fucking shit, they sounded so amazing tonight! I have seen them a few times, at various venues (from the Hideout to the Hotel SnS) and tonight was MOST EXCEEDINGLY TRIUMPHANT! I am so stoked for the recording of the new record. This one will get played on Grey's Anatomy fo sho!
PS - the cinnamon sun chips rule.

We Came Through!
I'm not one to value stuff over personal relationships, but the best thing that could happen when you have the blues is to see a copy of
Scott 3 on vinyl sitting on your bed. Dammit, Pauly, I wish you could have been there Monday. I know a public thank you is a little garish, but THANK YOU a bajillion times. I can't wait for Pitchfork, where we will have a crazy go nuts time. The first can of Sparks is on me. Wait, that was Intonation.
I will soldier on now, make a fresh start of never being sad at the Hideout again, starting tonite with Detholz! last appearance before Halloween (they say!) followed up by 3/5ths of Detholz! playing with Bobby Conn for his 40th bday Friday. They also play Saturday but I am going to make an effort to finally check out Steve's band after blowing him off like a billion times. Er, not like that.

Coming Soon
I'll muster the ability to post about Ed's Monday night going away show one of these days, without crying. It hurt.
"The Old Man's Back Again" with strings was amazing though.

I Saw A Darkness (slighly "better" "review")
I had only recently seen Will Oldham live for the first time last October and was impressed how he rocked everything that wasn't that rockin' to begin with. When I heard he was playing I See A Darkness in its entirety I knew I could not miss it. 8 hours of driving (well riding with good company) for a performance of one 40 something minute record, but it would have been worth it at 16 hours. Three guitars, including Matt Sweeney (and Pajo on one song), keys and violin on every song, and "harmonies" from his brother/bass player Paul. He was wearing eyeliner which was way more crazy street person than emo kid looking, especially as it ran down his face with his sweat. I really cannot put into words how intense the build to the chorus of "I See A Darkness" was. You could feel it in everyone who knew the album, whatever it was. The "setlist" was the booklet from the CD, I guess he needed a little reminder of what to play since he probably doesn't sit around listening to the album. I'm not big on listening to recordings of shows, but I think the recording of this one could trump the actual album for me (even with keyboard noise issues on Nomadic Revery.) I just hope it gets out there. (Fred Armisen was videotaping it, I'm going to assume there is killer audio out there as well.)
Oh my goodness.

Wow, just fucking wow. I would count
I See A Darkness amongst my 20 favorite records of ALL TIME and I just got to hear it live. With three fucking electric guitars, (one played by Matt Sweeney) and a violin. And Paul Oldham singing "harmonies". It was the ultimate indie rock religious experience. Seriously, when the first chorus of the title track finally exploded I cried a smidge and felt something I don't feel very often. Wow, I hope there is a recording.
(I'll post more on Saturday later, but I'll see you at Hideout tonite, RIGHT?!)

Two Upcoming Events You Must Not Miss
Way back in 2001 I moved to Chicago. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot had been completed, and leaked. A friend suggested we go see "the new guy from Wilco" and some other guy at the Hideout. LeRoy Bach and Edward Burch played some of the sweetest songs I had never heard and a bunch of covers that kept me going back at least twice a month on Mondays thru April 2002 when LeRoy left to go on tour with Wilco and Ed went on tour with Jay Bennett. They came back of course, and were there on and off... sometimes Nora O'Connor and Matt Weber would be there instead, sometimes it was any combination of the 4 (plus random friends who would stop by and play with them - Steve Frisbie, Steve Dawson, Andrew Bird, John Peacock)... The one constant was that the music was always amazing and the experience was unparalleled. I met people on those nights who are my closest friends today, drank countless cans of PBR, and probably have no chance in hell at remembering some of the best stuff.
I love Edward dearly, he is a wonderful man, a human jukebox, and is responsible for introducing me to some of my favorite songs EVER. He is moving to Texas, and his friends are assembling to give him the send-off he deserves: one more Monday night at the Hideout playing those songs we all love. If you live near Chicago, love music and life there is no way you should miss this evening. I am not even kidding. Or drunk. I suggest
you purchase a ticket in advance as well.
One of the friends I met at the above mentioned Monday nights is Adam. Ed and LeRoy would invite folks to get up and play when they were taking a break, and the first time I heard Adam sing I was all WTF?! He can really sing! This Saturday he is going to be recording a live album in a studio, and you should totally be there! It is at Wall to Wall studios, and there will be a keg. I will be at the late show.
